Skill System

There are 4 levels of mastery in the system and multiple paths you can take once you're past the newcomer stage of 2 sessions. These are the badges you can earn in your time with us.
The Combat Saber System is based on actual combat blade fighting, therefore grading is strict, and the skills needed for masteries are real.

Apprentice Rank
(16 weeks / 20 to 32 sessions)
From zero to understanding the basic strikes and footwork, this is where everyone starts from. There's a minimum of 4/5 months of training before apprentice trainees are allowed to be graded and progress to the next level.Apprentice trainees will gain proficiency in 5 main areas on their path to Initiate:
- Basic strikes and attack combinations
- Basic footwork for attacks and evasion
- Basic combat tactics
- Single saber combat (some exposure to double and staff saber)
- Functional fitness

Initiate Rank
(Continuous weekly sessions)
Timing is the name of the game here, combatants in this rank should understand the flow of attacks and know when to attack in and out with fluid footwork. Time before next rank is around 6 to 9 months. Initiates are able to enter national and international tournaments and help out beginners during class.Initiates will gain proficiency in 5 main areas on their path to Warrior:
- Advanced strikes and attack combinations
- Advanced footwork for attacks and evasion
- Combat tactics and strategy
- Single saber combat
- Double saber combat (exposure to staff saber)

Warrior Level
Weapon superiority in double sabers and saber staff are key in warrior combatants. The ability to be keenly aware of where your 2 weapons are (and your opponent's weapons) in space and time is a skill only acquired through hours upon hours of training. Time before next rank is around 9 to 12 months.Warriors will gain proficiency in 5 main areas on their path to Master:
- Thrusting attacks and combinations
- Close quarter footwork for attacks and evasion
- Weapon specific combat strategy
- Advanced double saber combat
- Basic/intermediate Saber staff combat

Coach Level
Mastery at all ranges is key at this level. All coaches are tasked to train all other ranks and manage training sessions for The Saber Authority.Coaches have proficiency in 3 main areas:
- Mastery of thrusting attacks and combinations
- Close quarter footwork for attacks and evasion
- Close quarter combat for all weapon types
All coaches carry full certification (Induction, Intermediate & Advanced levels) in the "Close Quarter Combatives" course managed by SurviTac Training & Consultancy and are proficient in:
- Footwork Tactics
- Single Sword
- Single Knife
- Offensive & Defensive Knife Tactics
- Double Sword
- Double Knife
- Sword & Knife Advanced Tactics
- Empty Hands Self Defence Application
